GPS Ratings – Key to Finding the Best System

GPS technology, while a wonderful invention, does not come cheap, at least depending on what unit is bought. Specialized GPS systems can be close to $10,000, while those designed for general consumer use can be hundreds. Even simple GPS tracking systems used for just exercise purposes can cost over $100. This is why it is important to find out which GPS system is the best before actually making a purchase. One can do this by reviewing and evaluating GPS ratings.

Online stores are the first type of sites that can offer GPS ratings and reviews. These ratings are usually given by other people who have purchased the product. They are given a chance to vote on how well the product performed, and then are allowed to leave a comment. The potential buyer sees how many ‘stars’ a product received along with the evaluation of other buyers. Ideally the advantage of using ratings through this method is that buyers have no ulterior motive when they rate the product they purchased. However it is obvious that some ratings are either not from customers or from people who really do not own or use the product. One must take the time to read between the lines when a review is either too good or too poor. Other sites including those from the manufacture or distributors are design to help you purchase their products. Obviously they lack objectivity which makes their ratings suspect.

Another source of good GPS ratings is found on the many online comparison sites. These sites contain GPS product reviews and comparisons written by professionals. They may or may not include comments from regular buyers. When it comes to buying, online comparison sites usually do not offer products for sale directly from their URL. Most of them will allow one to purchase through affiliate links, which are posted on the site. These affiliate links direct the visitor to the appropriate online store.

If you search the internet you will sometimes find written opinions and reviews from customers who really like the product or really **** it. Again GPS ratings from this source must be tempered with caution. Some authors have taken the time to create these ratings because they are trying to get visitors to buy from their affiliate links. Blogs that discuss GPS system technology are another source of ratings that can be used to compare GPS products. Others give ratings simply out of love of product function and design wanting to make sure potential customers get the best value for their money. Although these sites may not contain as much information as the more professional comparison sites, they may be a bit less overwhelming if one is trying to decide among just a couple of GPS brands.

If you plan on purchasing a GPS receiver, it would be wise to first visit a number of websites containing credible GPS ratings. These can be from online stores, comparison sites or third-party sites created by individuals. Through these ratings one can get an idea of how effective and reliable a GPS unit is without risking an investment.

Upro Golf GPS System Review

This Upro golf GPS review is of one of the newer golf GPS units to come on the market offering many advantages over its competitors.

One such advantage is that you are not required to pay for annual subscriptions for your Golf GPS maps. Unlike many others on the market that tie you in to a yearly contract.

So how do you get the course data?

Well you purchase it for each course; meaning that you if you don’t play on many courses, you can then save yourself a fair amount of cash!

While researching the information for this Upro golf GPS review we were very surprised by its rich feature set.

The Upro GPS is smaller than many of its leading competitors giving you the advantage of not having bulky items on you while taking a swing.

The data for the Upro golf GPS is available in two formats “Basic” and “Pro.”

Basic format shows you the hazards that are on the hole you are on, showing you this data in order from where your position is to the green. As with many similar devices it also shows you information relating to the green itself.

In both cases the GPS will give you information telling you the distance to the front, to the back and in the case of the green will show you the distance to the center. Despite the small size of the unit the information is displayed in an easy to view format allowing you to make easy assessments of the hole you are on.

Pro format offers you three different views of your current hole allowing you to plan out the perfect hole.

The three views the Upro golf GPS are:

Video flyover shows you a birds-eye view of the hole you to choose allowing you to plan your shots through to the hole. Measure, let’s you calculate any distance between two points you select. SmartView gives the user three options of views relative to where the person is at that point in time.

To summarize this Upro Golf GPS Review.

The Upro Golf GPS although being such a small unit, about the size of an iPod! Offers some fantastic features and a very clear display allowing the user to plan out the perfect round.

One of the down sides to this unit is the lack of a scoring storage system although with the many other features that it does have it is a worthy companion on the fairway.

GPS Systems 101

When you are considering which GPS system to purchase, there are several things you need to look out for and know about. The first thing to think about is what type of GPS (global positioning system) you require – do you need a car GPS, or do you simply want one of the best GPS systems available? Do you want a boat navigation system? Do you need a mobile GPS system or a fixed one? For example, the Magellan GPS Roadmate 700 gives you voice and visual directions, so with this global positioning system you really can’t get lost. What’s more, this GPS system has a touch screen, and an auto-complete feature for when you’re entering addresses, meaning no more misspelled addresses or suburbs. While we’re speaking about addresses, you can create an address book you’re your favorite or popular destinations. This Magellan GPS system really has it all!

Another one of the great GPS systems is the Magellan Roadmate 2000 GPS auto navigation system. This car GPS system boasts over 1.3 million pre-programmed points of interest, and has a function that helps you avoid traffic! Use global positioning to not only work your way through the city streets, but in the quickest and least stressful way (although, we can’t help with the husband or wife’s backseat driving)!

But not only can you purchase the best GPS systems to help you get around town – you can also use them as a GPS auto tracking system, for those of you who truly value your automobile and can’t bear the thought of anything happening to it. With a GPS system tracking your car, if the worst happens and your car does actually get stolen, the global positioning system can be followed to wherever the suspects might take it – or it can be intercepted by the Police before real harm comes to it! No more worrying about where you car will end up if it is stolen!

Mobile global positioning can also help with keeping track of wayward teens who borrow your car – no more do you have to worry about where your son or daughter has taken your car, you can simply keep track of it via the global positioning devices you have installed (and your children don’t even have to know the GPS system is in your car!). Plus there is the added benefit that the GPS system will help your children get from A to B, and not get lost in between – very important for any parent!

GPS solutions are many and varied, so before you go out and consider all the GPS systems, have a think about why you want it (keep track of your beloved vehicle, or monitor your son who just got his license and a new girlfriend?) and for what vehicle – boat, car, bike or something more adventurous! Your global positioning system is an investment for many reasons, so do your research and don’t make a decision you’ll regret.

GPS Systems and Mapping Software

I still carry a paper map in my car. I also know that I am among the few to do so. Nowadays, many people have shelled out the couple of hundred dollars necessary to carry a portable GPS system in their vehicles, which they happily affix to the windshield of their car. Still, others will pay upwards of thousands of dollars to have their vehicles come with built in GPS software. Like I said; I carry a paper map. In some ways, however, having a GPS is much more convenient- if not more accurate than having a paper map.

While having a paper map only costs $15 versus $250, it is not always as accurate as having a GPS system. In this day and age, there are more people populating cities across the country. Not only this, but in addition to an increased population; increased population means that there are constantly new homes being built on new streets that never existed before. Therefore, GPS systems are quicker to update you on areas that before were never populated. Paper maps simply cannot keep up. I would certainly not want to be caught in the middle of the day or night trying to find a street on a map that doesn’t exist because my map is “old”.

GPS systems are also extremely helpful in the fact that they reduce the distraction of you, the driver, having to think while you are driving. What do I mean by this? GPS systems provide turn-by-turn directions audibly to guide you to where you are going. What’s even better is the fact that if you accidentally miss your turn, the GPS will not only pick up on this, it will actually re-direct you! What a novel idea! There are also GPS systems that have voice recognition built in. You can upload the GPS system with the names, addresses and phone numbers of loved ones and then talk to your GPS system to tell it to call someone or give you directions to someone’s house.

So, have we seen the death of paper maps? No, not yet. People still purchase paper maps on an as-needed basis. For instance, if they are renting a car or have forgotten their GPS or don’t want to bring their GPS system with them for fear of it being stolen or somehow getting damaged. GPS systems have only increased in popularity in the past couple of years. As they become more and more affordable for the everyday person, I am sure that it will only be a matter of time before everyone and their mother has one. For some older people, GPS systems are a little too “technological” for them. They have trouble figuring out how to use all of the buttons and features. I know of one person who is in their 50s and received a portable GPS unit from her son because she is bad with directions. However, that GPS unit has stayed in the middle console of her car, untouched.

Types of GPS Systems

The global positioning system (GPS) is a very accurate and sensitive equipment to monitor the movements of any object and to provide needful information to the receiver. Originally used by the US Defence Department to monitor the movements of the ships or planes and also to detect encroachments of their sea or air space, this utility was later made available for public use. The system receives signals from satellites and provides the user with details about the position of any object and the timing of any event. There are three phases like Space, Control and User. The Space and Control sectors are under the supervision of the Government, but user facility has been made free from Government control.

Many private enterprises are manufacturing and marketing the GPS systems for commercial use. Today it is widely used to monitor the movements of vehicles as well as to locate stolen vehicles. GPS are also used to track shipments of goods. The system is being used to prevent crimes like hijacking and kidnapping which are widespread. In modern life the GPS is used to locate missing persons during travels. In racing and similar types of sports activities, GPS has become an effective tool to locate and retrieve vehicles as well as the persons involved. Educational and commercial uses of GPS are becoming popular due to the efficiency and accuracy of the system. The GPS plays a vital role in the information technology for mapping details of locations from websites. The antenna on the receiver picks up satellite signals which then calculate the distance between the location and the receiver. The system is used in aircrafts to provide automatic navigation and enable them to fly in the right course.

As GPS has many applications, those who want to use the system should choose the right device to obtain required benefits from it. Portable GPS with or without mapping facility are available. The device without mapping facility is cheaper than its counterpart with mapping. The portable facility is powered by batteries whereas vehicle mounted GPS will have 12 V wiring with antenna installed inside the vehicle. There are GPS which can be linked to the laptops. Varieties of GPS are in use today. Car GPS systems, handheld GPS, car tracking system and map based navigation system are some of them.

Internet is a good source to seek information about the GPS devices that are used for diverse purposes. The shoppers should locate a reputed dealer to avoid ending up with substandard products. Special features or requirements are to be specially mentioned while placing orders. Many online dealers offer free shipping and cheaper price tags with exemptions from the taxes. The buyers should take care to get the system installed only by the manufacturers or their authorized dealers to avail warranty benefits.

How Automotive GPS Systems Work

In recent times driving has become all the more simpler and exciting with the use of navigation systems such as automotive GPS systems. The time where you worried about getting to your intended destination is long gone because the automotive GPS system ensures that you get to your destination in due course without roaming about aimlessly and straying from your intended course. Honda was the first vehicle company to create the automotive navigation system as far back as the early 1980′s, at that time a device known as an accelerometer was used in order to determine precise locations as the means to use GPS systems weren’t available. Nowadays you have a lot of popular vendors selling automotive GPS systems as well as other navigation systems and you are free to make an independent choice.

For those who have no detailed understanding of how automotive GPS systems work, they should understand that these systems make use of satellite signals in order to determine the precise location of a vehicle. Not all automotive navigation systems make use of GPS technology and certain differences exist with other GPS systems that use data on your precise position to superimpose it on a map and determine your particular location.

Different aspects make up a complete navigation system. These different components are the aerial view of the map which changes according to the motion of the vehicle; this component is easily the most crucial component, distance gauge, distance numbers as well as the next curves bird’s eye view in order to protect you from harm.

Navigation systems make use of road databases which contain a complete listing of the names and addresses of different locations which are stored as geographical coordinates. Any information that requires updating is supplied through internet technology as the vehicles moves from one particular location to the other. It also has a vector map of a particular area which ensures that it is easy to find a person or business if you have their particular name or address.

Databases which are employed in such systems can be easily kept on storage media such as hard disks or by using certain memory known as read only memory. Read only memory comes directly programmed from a factory or stored on other optical storage media devices such as CD’s and DVDs. Base maps are usually stored constantly in the memory of the device because they don’t change. The base maps are used to provide precise and accurate information about any current location that a user may find themselves in or which they may be interested in. Systems exist which allow for a combination of all these elements.

History has it that the navigation system that was primarily created to function with GPS was developed by Pioneer in the year 1990. Nowadays GPS navigation systems have come a very long way. You can use them not only to determine your location but to locate other essential services such as gas stations, restaurants and motels. Auxiliary functions which include messaging capabilities and the ability to watch DVD’s may also come included.

What to Look For in a Hiking GPS System

Heading off into the woods for a hiking trip? Every year you hear stories of lost hikers, campers, and mountain climbers. One way to prevent such a scenario is with a hiking GPS. There are lots of hiking GPS review sites to help explain the features of each model. However, what features are important for your outdoors adventure?

A hiking GPS is useless on your trip if the map does not cover your travel area. Some hiking GPS systems offer downloads for different maps and locations. In addition, some offer topographical map downloads; very handy in rugged wilderness. Other units are basic, offing longitude and latitude, relying on you to carry the map and determine your exact location.

A GPS system is also useless if its to cumbersome to bring on your hike. Weight and size are critical, and a balancing factor in determining other features. Lighter is better, but will have a trade off in features, screen size and quality, and battery life. Pick a hiking GPS that has the features you will need, but is still light enough that it will not get left back at camp.

Battery life is an additional factor when choosing the right hiking GPS for your adventure. If you are camping with a generator or rv, and only taking 1-2 hour hikes, battery life is not critical. If you are performing a three day mountain climb, battery life is extremely important. Look for a GPS with a battery life twice as long as you anticipate needing, and all should be well. More battery life is better, but will come with a trade off in features and weight.

Finally, consider other features you might want. Color screens are handy and easier to read. Some hiking GPS systems track your path, nice for helping you find your way back and tracking how far to yet to go. Information such as sun/moon cycles, and hunting/fishing cycles are available, with more features being added all the time.

As a GPS consumer, you must weigh these factors, as well as price, to determine the proper hiking GPS for you. If your needs are basic, a watch GPS tracking your longitude and latitude works wonders with a quality map. Others will want the full features from a high tech hiking GPS. The choice is yours; ;choose wisely and a hiking GPS will help your wilderness adventure end in a safe and exciting trip.

GPS for trucks are becoming more available and it’s about time.

If any sector of the marketplace was in need of GPS navigational systems it is the trucking industry. Yet this truckers GPS potential market seems to have been ignored by the GPS manufacturers or at least until now. It’s like someone turned on the light as there are now some really useful truck GPS systems coming on the market. Not only are these useful for truckers but they are also a great aide to RV owners as with a GPS for RV many of the requirements are the same.

For instance, the driver can input the length, width, weight and height of the load. In addition, most truckers GPS systems allow the trucker to input the Hazmat level of the load. All this information is taken into consideration when creating the route. Restricted roads show up on the map and are avoided by the routing system. In addition, many of the new truck GPS units warn of high winds, steep inclines, hazardous

Garmin Nuvi 255WT Review

Garmin’s Nuvi 255WT is a unique and powerful unit as it is not only a GPS navigation unit but a travelers’ reference guide and a portable digital entertainment system – all in one. Available, in Europe, the Nuvi 255WT offers one of the most powerful GPS systems around as if offers amazingly detailed street mapping of particular countries, towns and regions, turn by turn directions in colorful 3D and 2D maps with its 480×272 pixel, 4.3″ widescreen, touchscreen LCD display. Garmin much like their competitors offer preinstalled maps and their Navigator NT software which has detailed points of interest information, giving 255WT users information on hotels, restaurants, gas stations, ATMs and other points of interest along your way. Unlike their competitors, the Garmin Nuvi 255WT allows users the ability to add custom points of interest, adding school zones, parks or anything else you’d want. You can also set how frequently the device will alert you on upcoming points of interest. And Garmin offers MSN Direct which promises to keep users on time while giving them up to date news, traffic, weather and the other valuable information they’d need. Of course, in order to use MSN, the special receiver and a low-cost subscription is necessary.

The Nuvi 255WT’s sleek, thin lightweight design allows users to the ability to easy carry the device in a pocket or a purse. But most interesting is the addition of a pre-installed picture viewer, a world traffic clock with tine zones, a currency converter and a measurement converter – all of which are helpful for international drivers. And there’s the addition of Garmin Lock, an anti-theft feature that no other manufacturer has produced yet. Plus there’s the industry standard voice recognition program, allowing users to speak their destinations into the device. In addition, Garmin has a specialized choice of route program which allows users to program routes for the fastest or shortest route as well as route avoidance which will help drivers avoid traffic, construction and other delays based on real time results. A rechargeable lithium ion battery can get up to five continuous hours of usage on the road.

Garmin Nuvi 255WT advanced Cyclops safety camera database helps you travel with the confidence you are driving safely, responsibly and legally. As you approach one of hundreds of fixed, mobile and temporary safety cameras, variable limit or red light speed cameras across Europe, it gives an audible alert, overspeed warning and speed limit information.

But where Garmin differs from any other manufacturer on the market is that Garmin allows users to download custom vehicle icons to show your location on your GPS maps and users could download travel guides with more detailed information of points of interest, tourist sites and more information for curious users who want to know their destinations better than ever before. Plus, Garmin offers special information and deals for authorized dealers of Garmin related products. And you can view your travel memories on the unit with a preinstalled picture viewer.

Portable Navigation GPS System – Sony NV-U83T Review

Sony has released another mobile GPS navigation unit with increased features from the Nav-U NV-U73T. The Sony Nav-U NV-U83T will be shipped mid-April to the many people that are anxiously waiting for it.

The Sony NV-U83T takes the same basic features of the already impressive NV-U73T, and adds upon them to make an even greater product. The first noticeable improvement is that of a larger screen. The display was upgraded from a 4.3″ to a 4.8″. It seems like a small upgrade, but those that are used to screens similar to these will know that half an inch can make a big difference.

Also included in this improved product is the Position Plus feature. With Position Plus, the NV-U83T will still continue to work and direct you when GPS signals are temporarily interrupted. This is made possible with many sensors that will observe your location in relation to the map. That is quite unique. A GPS navigation unit that does not always need a GPS signal to work. Now we do not have to worry about getting lost due to a temporary loss of GPS signal.

The greatest upgrade the NV-U83T includes is the Built in Bluetooth. If we are driving with a GPS navigation unit then we are already worrying about where we are going and how to get there. Why should we have to also worry about talking on the phone? Sony has made things that much simpler by integrating the two together. The NV-U83T allows us to connect with our Bluetooth device for easy hands free talking. Safely make and receive calls, while being navigated to our destination.

The Sony NV-U83T still includes that great features of it’s little brother. The dual view provides an easier and clearer view of how to get around. It still comes pre-loaded with maps of the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. And of course, it features the gesture commands. Program destinations to the wave of a finger on the display and the NV-U83T will take you there. Sony makes things simple and easy for drivers. The only thing not so simple here is the price tag. Most stores are selling the Sony NV-U83T for around the $400 range. However, it can be found for cheaper than that. Some stores are going as low as the mid $300′s. Despite the price tag, in the end the NV-U83T is a great navigation unit.

Make Your Own Maps With a GPS Navigation System

The Global Positioning System (GPS) means the GPS receiver. This useful system was developed by the US defense department which later became available to everyone else. It is such a useful device, that people would like to have it while traveling by road but it is certainly no magic so as to give you each and every location and map readymade. Most of Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation devices come with the built-in maps but lot of these maps are not with adequate information and details. In order to overcome this hindrance while you are driving or outside and depending on the maps, you will need to have maps designed by you which will give just the information that you require. These customized maps created with your GPS are reliable as they are carefully designed in accordance with your requirement. You can now map out your travels by using a free software and access to internet of course with the help of a personal computer.

You would certainly like to know how it works. The problem which occurs with the GPS receivers which are equipped mostly with vector graphics which is the ultimate graphic solution is; one, you shall not be able to download maps with high degree of detailing maps. Two, you cannot change the built-in vector maps in your GPS navigation device except a few. There are many demo/presentation softwares available in the market today which will create as well as edit the waypoints, paths, routes, rack logs or simple coordinates.

To get started, first get a map, compile it and send to the GPS receiver. There are several map display software programmes in the market but none of the softwares has all the features required to do it all. Depending on the kind of work and maps you have to do, you may require different softwares. Download the software to make your own maps. You can either get your own paper map or download these from the web sites available.

After starting with getting a map image, calibrate this image, then editing of the image is required; if you would like to delete or change the tracks or cut down to fit it into the track log memory of your GPS. You can create streets and trails and also add forests or lakes and points of interest like specific buildings and so on. You must give names and some description as it should be shown on the display. Then you will need to import this map data to the software programme. All this comes with doing some good effort; yes, a lot of searching on internet has to be done in order to find the geographical references of places that you want to show on your map. Either the web sites related to travel or reports and blogs from people. With the help of the ‘pencil tool’ option, you can easily create waypoints on the map. Do not forget to save the information before you proceed further.

Once you have created, compiled, edited and imported the maps, you’ll be required to upload it to your GPS receiver. After taking the final step of transferring the data to GPS, you are all set to begin your journey with the help of these customized maps you made. Some creativity mixed with the features of the software that will help you design the map which will have all the information you have fed it with will bring great results. Don’t worry as you would get step by step tutorial with the software to create the custom GPS maps.

Garmin Nuvi GPS Systems Guide You

Have you heard of Garmin Nuvi GPS systems? There is a good chance that you have due to their immense popularity. I bet you’re wondering why they are so popular though. There are a lot of reasons. One is that they have a great reputation for offering extremely accurate and reliable navigation instruction under extreme conditions. Another reason they are popular is because they have a ton of additional features that make using them fun. Even more, some people love these devices because they come in such a stylish package that they make the cars you place them in look good.

The Models

There are over 30 varieties of Garmin Nuvi GPS systems. In this article, we will look at seven models that seem to be more popular among both consumers and reviewers. Though the descriptions will be brief, they will give you a better idea of the standout features that make each model both unique and appealing to customers.

200 – This device is more moderately priced than some of the others, costing around the same price as its model number. But because it has a lower price doesn’t mean it is skimping on the features. If you like to travel within or outside of the continental United States you can do both thanks to its preloaded maps of the 48 continental states, as well as those for Hawaii and Puerto Rico. It comes with an extensive POI database, 2D and 3D maps, turn-by-turn voice navigation, and tools like a picture view, world travel clock and currency converter, making it more than a navigation device.

250 – The Garmin Nuvi GPS 250 is a small step up in price from the 200 but offers a huge leap in features. For example, the preloaded map database is broadened considerably to give you coverage of North America and Europe. It also has 2D and 3D maps, turn-by-turn voice instruction, and POIs. Even more, you get the picture viewer, world travel clock, currency converter and measurement converter for no extra charge.

250W – If you like the features you get from the 250 but need a wide screen then you might want to get your hands on the 250W. It has the same features as the 250, but with a 4.3-inch screen instead of a 3.5-inch screen. If you have vision problems or simply like the look of a bigger screen then this is the choice for you.

350 – This model is often advertised as a pocked-sized personal travel assistant. This is because it is much more than just a navigation device. For example, in addition to the street maps, POIs, and turn-by-turn instruction, you get an optional FM TMC traffic receiver, as well as entertainment features such as a MP3 player, audio book player, picture view, language translator, anti-theft feature, and a lot more.

360 – Also considered a pocket-sized travel assistant, the 360 gives you all of the features you love about the 350 with one extra – Bluetooth technology. With this Garmin Nuvi GPS system, you can go anywhere, enjoy your extras, and even talk to your friends hands-free without ever having to pick up your phone. Even more, when you scroll through the POI database you can call any of the locations with 1-touch dialing.

660 – This is probably the most popular Garmin Nuvi GPS system on the market. It is well known for all of its features, which include everything listed in the above models with a few more. Some include a FM transmitter, traffic alerts for road construction, a 4.3-inch large touchscreen display, customizable POIs, turn-by-turn voice navigation with street names called out, and language translation.

850 – Stepping it up a notch is the Garmin Nuvi GPS 850, an advanced navigator with speech recognition that let’s you make menu selections verbally, a widescreen display, FM translator, and tons of preloaded maps. Even more, by using the “Where am I?” function, you can ask this simple question to the device and it will give you your exact latitude and longitude coordinates on the map then give you the closest police stations, hospitals, fuel stations, addresses and more. If you want to plan your route ahead of time, you can save up to 10 routes in the system before you even leave your house. It will simulate the turns and give you an electronic bread crumb trail to tell you where you’ve been.

This list of Garmin Nuvi GPS systems is definitely not complete. But it does give you a good idea of the great features you can expect from these devices. So take the time to look over the Garmin Nuvi GPS devices on the market. You are guaranteed to find the one you love.
