Ntp Server Static GPS Antenna Systems

The Global positioning System (GPS) is often used by computer equipment, such as NTP Server systems, to provide an accurate timing reference for time critical applications. This article provides an overview of GPS for timing applications and describes the equipment used to install a GPS antenna in a static location.

Overview - Using GPS for Accurate Time

The Global Positioning System is a US military system for worldwide navigation. The system consists of 24 orbiting satellites, each satellite has a highly accurate atomic clock on-board synchronised to UTC time. The satellites continuously broadcast time and position information. The time and position information can be obtained worldwide with a GPS receiver and antenna. GPS works continuously in any whether conditions, anywhere in the world. Additionally, there is no set up fee or subscription charges to utilise the GPS systems. Many computer timing systems and NTP Server systems utilise GPS as an accurate external timing reference.

The Accuracy of GPS Timing Systems

GPS receivers provide highly accurate position and timing information. Typically, a GPS receiver can provide positioning information to an accuracy of 15m. NTP Server systems can obtain timing information from GPS to a resolution of a few nanoseconds.

The GPS Signal

The transmitted GPS signal is very weak low-power radio signal, designated L1 and L2. L1 is the civilian GPS frequency transmitted at 1575.42 MHz. The signals travel by line of sight and can pass through clouds, glass and plastics but are blocked by objects such as metal and brickwork. Therefore, the ideal location for a GPS antenna is on rooftop with a full 360-degree view of the sky. However, often installation on the side of a building or in a window can provide adequate results. As a rule of thumb, the better the view of the sky, the greater the likelihood of a good consistent signal lock.

GPS Timing Antenna Types

The GPS antenna acts as an amplifier to boost the GPS signal for transmission along a cable, usually coax, to the GPS receiver. GPS Timing antenna’s provided with NTP server systems utilise a pole-mounting system. The antenna screws to a threaded pole for installation on rooftops. This arrangement provides the GPS antenna with a rigid mount easily able to withstand high winds without damage. Typically the GPS antenna is fairly small in size, measuring less than 90cm in diameter. Low-cost patch type antennas are also available, but these are generally better suited to vehicle applications.

GPS Antenna Cable Types and Cabling Distances

The cable distance that can be utilised by a GPS antenna depends mainly on the amplification of the GPS antenna and the quality of coax used in the installation. A typical GPS timing antenna may have a gain of 35 db. Relatively low-quality coax such as RG58 has an attenuation of 0.64 db/m at 1575 MHz. Therefore, a cable run of 55m can be obtained using RG58 cable. With very high quality coax cable, such as LMR400, an unaided cable run of 200m can be achieved. However, very high quality coax can be expensive. A good price-performance compromise is LMR200 cable, which can be run unaided to 80m.

Extending Cabling Distance with In-Line GPS Amplifiers

In-line GPS amplifiers provide further amplification of the GPS signal to increase the cable distance between the GPS antenna and receiver. GPS amplifiers are fitted in-line with the antenna cable and obtain power from the receiver via the coax cable. No external power-supplies are required. Typically, a GPS amplifier may add a further 20 dB of gain, adding 30m of low-quality RG58 coax, 40m of LMR200 coax or 100m of high quality LMR400 coax. Additionally, multiple in-line amplifiers may be utilised to further increase cable distance.

Sharing a Single Antenna Between Multiple Receivers - GPS Splitters

GPS splitters allow a single GPS antenna to be utilised by two or more NTP server systems. The GPS splitter splits the signal received from the GPS antenna into multiple outputs for synchronizing multiple NTP servers. GPS splitters are generally available with 2, 4 or 8 outputs.

Protecting GPS Systems - GPS Surge Suppressors

Surge suppressors protect expensive NTP server equipment from electro-static discharges, such as lightning, that may be picked up by an externally mounted GPS antenna. Surge suppressors are installed in-line on the coax cable between the antenna and receiver, ideally where the cable enters the building. Surge suppressors require a low-impedance ground, to discharge any received surge. The surge suppressor requires no power-supply or additional cabling.

GPS Tracking Solutions: What are the Main Components of a GPS Tracking System? Part 2

In the first part of this series of 10 articles I explained the differences between GPS Navigation Systems and GPS Tracking Systems, and how they are two completely different of implementations of Location Based Services. In this second article I will develop some additional concepts related to the elements that constitute a GPS Tracking System. There are 3 main parts to a GPS Tracking System:

- A GPS device or GPS Tracker, which receives the location information and then delivers it to a software application.

- A data transmission system, which takes the information provided by the GPS Tracker, and delivers it to the software application.

- A Software Application, which presents to its users the data recollected by the GPS Tracker in several formats including maps and reports.

This article will present the main components of a GPS Tracking Solution, and will start expanding on the first component: GPS Trackers. It will take me this article and the next one to go in detail over GPS devices.

GPS Devices

==========

In this section I will define what a GPS Device, and how they work; after that I will present the types of GPS Trackers, including most of the features that these devices offer, and my opinion in regards to each type.

At its simplest definition, the GPS device, or better the GPS tracker, is the component in charge of receiving the information about the location of the vehicle, and providing this data to the GPS Tracking Application through the Data Transmission System (which will be explained in coming articles). GPS Trackers are usually small boxes (metal or plastic) that can be the size of a man’s wallet, or a little bigger. All of them need at least one antenna (GPS antenna), and most of them need an additional antenna to enable the data transmission module. So this leads to a first classification of GPS Trackers:

-Full satellite trackers. This type of trackers will use satellites to receive and transmit data.

-Hybrid trackers. This type of trackers will use satellites to acquire location (we will see some variations here later in this article), and another method to transmit the data (a data modem, a data port to download the data, etc).

On the next article I will expand on these concepts.

So, the main task of a GPS Tracker is to provide information of the location of a vehicle or an asset, or a person. The location of the units is usually acquired from the GPS satellites, but there is another method based on triangulation with cell towers to calculate locations. Getting the location from satellites is the most accurate mechanism, providing a minimal margin of error most of the times (from 2 up to 50 feet). GPS location can be acquired anywhere in the world. The only down side for this location technology is that the GPS antenna has to have a view to the sky. For example, if the vehicle gets into a garage, most probably there will not be GPS locations available.

Getting the location based on a triangulation with the cell towers (those that are also used by our cell phones to transmit voice and data) has a bigger margin of error (up to a few hundred feet), making it a not very accurate location mechanism. This type of location also requires the presence of the named cell towers to work. The upside of this mechanism is that it will perfectly work within buildings, which is not the case for GPS satellite location. Some GPS Trackers are designed to work with both location mechanisms, creating a new concept called Assisted GPS (AGPS).

There are mainly three types of GPS Trackers: Passive Trackers, PING Trackers, and Live Trackers. Also, there are some GPS Trackers that have more features than other - not just a location of the vehicle.

In this article I have dissected a GPS Tracking solution into three main components: a GPS Tracker, a data transmission system, and a GPS Tracking application. I have also started exposing the details of GPS Trackers, specifically the two main ways to locate a vehicle. Finally, I introduced two more elements to consider in GPS Trackers: types of trackers and advanced features of a GPS device.

GPS Auto Navigation Systems

Over the past couple of years, the cost of installing a GPS auto navigation system has fallen considerably, and as an inevitable result of this, more and more people are taking advantage of it in order to make it easier to find out where they are going, plan their journeys, and keep track of where they are.

Satellite navigation dates back a lot longer than many people realize. The principles behind SatNav were first tested back in 1967, but it took nearly 30 years before the NavStar GPS System first began operation as a military application in the mid 1990s. Civilian use of GPS navigation was made available soon after the military launch, but the initial costs of using the system were very high, and required ongoing subscriptions to be paid. The first people who took advantage of GPS were pilots, and surveyors, who needed to be able to measure distances with pinpoint accuracy. In the early days , an affordable GPS auto navigation system was out of reach for the average car owner.

Over time, the costs of GPS auto navigation system has fallen considerably, and there are increasing numbers of applications for them and the data that they provide in our daily lives. Manufacturers such as Garmin and TomTom have combined GPS signals Data with existing map information and complex mathematical algorithms to create systems that can be used for navigation on the roads and highways.

These GPS auto navigation systems can be installed into any car in a matter of minutes, and then be used to plan journeys, and keep track of where you are to stop you getting lost on the roads. By being combined with other data, such as traffic news feeds, GPS auto navigation systems can warn drivers about road congestion, and provide alternative routes in real time to ensure that no-one who has such a GPS needs get stuck in a queue again.

There are a number of different styles of GPS auto navigation systems available to suit the needs of the individual, from basic models through to expensive and highly accurate systems able to manage large amounts of data and provide information to the users in order to give feedback about where they have been.

The simplest kind of auto navigation GPS system is a removable gadget that stores the map data internally, and uses a satellite signal to pinpoint the position of the unit. By combining the map data and the satellite signal, routes can be planned, and the user can find their way, while seeing a graphical representation of their route on a small screen. These GPS auto navigation systems can be either removable, or fixed into the car. Many new models actually integrate the GPS into the dashboard, while non fixed systems can either be mounted on the dash, or attached to the windshield using a suction cup.

As well as dedicated auto GPS devices, it is also possible to buy a large number of other gadgets with GPS as a built in feature. Some GPS PDAs can have a GPS module plugged in to them, and used in cars, and an increasing number of cell phones have GPS as a standard feature. On the whole, although these devices have GPS built in, it is not of the same standard as a dedicated system, and wile it may help you know where you are, it will not provide such accurate data or be able to plan routes on the go as well as one of the custom systems from Garmin or Magellan.

At the top end of the list of auto navigation GPS systems, there are a number of fantastic options available. Many of the high end GPS auto navigation systems include a range of features to make getting around as simple and convenient as possible.

Aside from the standard information about maps and positions, these GPS systems can also provide information about local amenities such as gas stations, motels, and even speed control cameras in certain countries. More expensive GPS auto navigation systems come with the ability to upload additional map systems so they can be used in different countries, and through the use of local radio services, provide comprehensive traffic information to the driver wherever in the world he is.

Whether you want a simple auto navigation GPS system to help you avoid the traffic problems in your home town, or are a cross country driver who needs the long distance planning flexibility for getting from a-to-b as efficiently as possible, there is a GPS system available that will suit your needs.

Tactical GPS Tracking Systems – Location, Location, Location!

Although we might not realize it, GPS systems are all around us. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, which, as its name suggests, is a system that reveals the exact location of an object, provided that object has a GPS transmitter attached to it somehow. GPS works by performing GPS calculations using information provided by specially designated satellites. Transmitters in earlier GPS systems had to have a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. To a certain degree that is true in consumer navigational systems such as Tom-Tom or Garmin, as well as the GPS capabilities of most modern cell phones, but in commercial and tactical systems that is not necessarily the case. As research continues on improving GPS technology, more powerful GPS transmitters no longer need a direct view of the sky, which makes them very useful in covertly tracking a moving object.

To give a classic Hollywood example of a quasi-GPS system in use is in Star Wars Episode Two, when Obi-Wan Kenobi throws a “tracker” as it is called in the film onto Jango Fett’s ship in a last-ditch attempt to capture him. He is later able to follow him because of a corresponding system in his ship which he used to pinpoint the tracker’s location in space. Of course this is a complete dramatization using special film effects and futuristic starships, but the basic principle of GPS holds true: using a transmitter of some sort that sends information about its location to a computer that can translate it into usable data.

A Tactical GPS System goes above and beyond the GPS systems most people see and interact with in their day to day lives. Although, once more, the basic idea of a GPS system still holds true, but more expensive GPS systems come with a few very helpful extra features that are crucial for successful vehicle tracking or people tracking.

A Tactical GPS System, such as the one found at from SpyZone.com, has many features that some cheaper GPS Systems lack. The highlight of all these is that it uses real-time GPS tracking that can be viewed with a high-resolution map from Google Earth™ so you can get a perfect view of your target.

So how does it work?

The Tactical GPS Tracking System sends out bursts of information using cellular SMS, better known as text messages. These messages contain detailed information about the location of the tracking target, which can be viewed from a computer or a cell phone. The GPS Transmitter itself is small and unobtrusive, measuring just six and a half inches long.

The Tactical GPS Tracking System is good for:

Monitoring of VIP transport

Covert vehicle tracking

Keeping track of your loved ones

GPS Charts Course For Success

GPS systems have become increasingly popular, portable and affordable. Sales for this small navigation system are off the charts, and they are the hottest ticket at every electronics store and big box retailer around.

So what is GPS exactly, how does it work, and why is it so popular? What other uses are there for technology? For the answers to this and more, keep reading.

What is GPS?

GPS is an abbreviation for Global Positioning System. This technology was developed by the US Department of Defense, and employs a network of 24 strategically placed satellites around the globe. It was originally intended for military use only, but the government made it available for anyone to use in the 1980s. That coupled with latest advances in portable technology has made GPS the new hot item. It is extremely popular with those who drive for a living, such as couriers.

How Does it Work?

A GPS receiver uses signals transmitted by these GPS satellites to triangulate exact locations. The 24 satellites circle the planet twice a day and transmit signals to the earth, which are what the receivers use. The receivers basically use the difference between the time a signal was transmitted and received to calculate how far away the satellite is.

In order to track movement as well as calculate an object’s latitude and longitude, a GPS receiver has to get signals from at least three satellites. If you add one more satellite to the mix, you can track altitude as well. One the receiver has the location, other variables can be accounted for such as speed, distance to destination, and more.

New advances in GPS technology such as Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and Differential GPS (DGPS) have made it possible to get accuracy down to within three meters of a signal. While WAAS is widely available in newer GPS systems, DGPS requires additional equipment and is mostly used in marine systems and by the US Coast Guard.

Popular Uses for GPS

The most common application for GPS is in small receivers that can be mounted in your car or carried by hand. These compact devices are usually used for directions, and include speakers that give turn by turn spoken directions to avoid being distracted by looking at a tiny map. But GPS users are discovering new uses for the technology daily.

One of the first widespread uses of GPS before the handheld was the Lo-Jack. This was a chip implanted in a vehicle that police stations could use to locate stolen vehicles. The Lo-Jack became the inspiration for locating other objects, especially living ones.

GPS collars have become popular for wandering pets. So when little Spot or Fluffy can’t be found, you can simply use a GPS signal to find them. Missing children can be found with a popular cell phone software that uses the GPS signal to locate them.

The new handheld revolution owes a lot of its success to the iPod. This popular portable music player spawned the invention of parallel hard-drive technology, which allows you to double the disk space of a hard drive without increasing the physical dimensions.

So as you can see, the GPS has a lot a reasons for its recent success. And with a sharp and steady increase in sales, the technology has become a lot more popular and affordable than before. You can buy a inexpensive receiver with a major name brand starting at about $150.
